The trial

Written for an english class assignment in October of 1987.
I was walking home in the dark of the night. I needed to get home before I was missed by my mother. When I got home I knew I was too late by the look on my mother's face, but she did not do anything to punish me except to send me to my room.
Late that night she called on the spirits to send me to my judgement, my mother is what some people call an animist, that is a believer in the supernatural.
The spirits are strange and chaotic, they decided to take me before Ptah, he is the mightiest of the ancient gods, for it was he who created the universe and all the other gods that followed.
Though my mother meant for me to get an unfair trial, Ptah is always fair. When Ptah spoke, the ground shook, he said "Through the eons I have tried many people, and have found no excitement in it. Thus I have decided to try a trial on you that has never been used. Do you have anything to say?". Though I was scared, I found the strength to reply "I accept the terms you have given.". Then Ptah boomed "You have no choice whether or not to accept or decline.".
With a wave of his hand and a few arcane words he yelled "Let the trial begin.", and I was instantly teleported before I had a chance to say anything more to him. When I arrived I was taken aback by the smell of fire and sulfur. Looking around at the landscape I recognized the area as Nessus, the deepest and most horrible layer of hell. Nessus is ruled by Asmodeus, the ruler of all the layers of hell. I knew that the only way for me to get out was through Asmodeus' palace.
I had studied some of my mother's books and even though my studies were not complete, I knew many things, such as the fact that Asmodeus' palace was at the lowest point in Nessus. I began by walking in the direction of a large crevice, but before I could get a hundred feet I was attacked by a demonic bird, I hit it, but it didn't even seem to notice, so I tried more advanced means, I fired a bolt of magical energy at it destroying one of its wings. I t tried to get close enought to me to use its claws, but I fired another bolt striking it square in the chest, it gave a terrifying screech as it died. After it died I continued on towards the crevice. Along the way towards the crevice I fought another winged demon, but got a leg wound before I could kill it. As I neared the crevice, I knew that it was not the one I wanted, but I continued on, because soo it would be dark and I needed shelter from the demons of the night.
I arived at the crevice just before darkness came, and had time to look around and find a small cave. As I entered The cave I was attacked by a bone devil, it was small and obviously an outcast because of its size. It must have thought defeating me would allow it to reenter the demonic society, it jumped at me and slice at my already wounded leg. His sudden attack caught me off guard, and I didn't have time to react. Then it slashed at my arm, I had recovered from the surprise and resisted the pain enough to throw a magical bolt at him and shatter him.
The cave wasn't large, but it was big enough for me. In the back of the cave I found a sword, a ring and a scroll with some sort of protection spell on it. I used the scroll to place the protection on the mouth of the cave. The sword had a name on it, but it translated to "Orc Slayer", not very useful in hell. The ring was a healing ring so I put it on, I knew it would heal my wounds over night. I had grown very tired and so curled up in the back of the cave and went to sleep.
I awoke to the sounds of battle outside of the cave. When I looked I saw a large winged demon fighting a wizard, the wizard was beginning to look very weak. I decided to help him out by distracting the demon, I fired a bolt of magic at the demon and when it turned to me, I saw a bolt of lightning fly from the wizard's staff and destroy the demon.
I helped the wizard into the cave and gave him some water from what little I had. He told me his name was Jalka and he was from an island realm I had never heard of. He was only a little bit more powerful than me, but he had already expended most of his energy. We rested for a little while and he joined me as I continued on towards Asmodeus' palace.
Along the way we encountered a very large demon, Jalka said it was a Kalkydri, a greater demon. We saw it coming and so we were prepared, I struck first throwing a bolt of magic at it, Jalka shot another lightning bolt from his staff. The demon seemed wounded, but clawed Jalka, he screemed out, but I knew there was nothing I could do, I shot another bolt at it while it was occupied with Jalka, and Jalka broke his staff in two, it exploded killing the demon. When I went to Jalka, I knew it was too late, the damage from the claw had nearly killed him and the explosion had done the rest. I rested for a short time, and continued on towards the palace.
I soon arrived at the palace, there wer only four demons guarding it. They were not extremely powerful, why would anyone attack the ruler of hell's palace? I was able to overcome them after a short battle, although my leg was injured again during the battle.
When I entered I was in a room bigger than some large houses back home, the room had a door on each wall, I decided to try the one to the right first. Inside I saw another greater demon, not a good choice. I then tried the door at the far end away from the entrance, inside I saw a portal of some kind. There was some writing along the edge, it translated to something about going back whence you came, so I decided to step through it. The trip home made me very sick, but at least I made it home.
