Confessions of a courtroom yoyo part 1 - May 8, 2007

You get the dreaded notice in the mail, report for jury duty on this date.

You arrive early, and spend 10 minutes looking for a parking spot, wondering where the people who arrive later will park.

You walk in the building going through not one, but two metal detectors to get to the courtroom, you sit down, the A/C is on, but it is ok.

People continue to pile in until you are packed in like sardines in the seats, the A/C is really going now, it is getting cold. People around you start sneezing and coughing, you learn the man next to you has bronchial asthma and by the end you can hear his breath sounds.

A full hour after you were told to be there, the judge and clerk of court show up.

Jury qualification then occurs, taking about an hour followed by a brief discussion between the judge and the lawyers, you are told to take a 30 minute break, but back back promptly after the 30 minutes.

You come back a little early and are not allowed in the courtroom, the judge and lawyers are discussing case specifics, so everyone stands in the halls, an hour later, the clerk of court comes out and dismisses you for the day, reminding you to call back after 6pm to determine if you have to come in tomorrow.

You call back that evening to get a message that says to call back tomorrow at noon, so you go to work and call at noon, the message, come in at 2:30, you get off work, and drive in, parking is still bad, you get in sit down, at 2:30 the clerk comes out and says you are not needed today, call the number tonight for further instructions.
